Peng Liyuan, the first lady of China, has urged for deeper cooperation in education and poverty alleviation for women. Peng, the wife of President Xi Jinping, made the remarks while addressing via video link the forum on women’s education and poverty reduction, co-sponsored by All China Women’s Federation and related institutions of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Peng, who is also a special envoy for the advancement of girls’ and women’s education for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, stressed for deepen cooperation in education and poverty alleviation for women, saying that education should serve to offer hope to more women.
Peng said that eradicating poverty and embracing happiness are the common ideals of all women.
She highlighted that there are still 435 million women living in poverty globally, with gender gaps in education still obvious and the COVID-19 pandemic posing new challenges on poverty reduction for women.
Eliminating poverty and embracing happiness are the common aspirations of all women, and women can be empowered to shake off poverty by receiving education and obtaining knowledge and skills, she said.
After persistent efforts, China has won a complete victory in its war against poverty and ensured that women can have equal access to education, making women the beneficiaries, participants and contributors in poverty alleviation, she noted.
Peng called for persistent efforts to enable more women to have the opportunity to live a better life.
Hailing women’s role in promoting the SCO’s development over the past 20 years since its founding, Peng called for joining hands and persisting in deepening cooperation on women’s education and poverty reduction, adding this would light up the path of hope for women through education and bring women more opportunities to make life better.
On July 20th, President Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan, were invited to deliver a video speech to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Women’s Education and Poverty Reduction Forum.
